Trump Kids Ditch Social Conservatism

Washington Watcher II

Trump’s children seem to have ditched social conservatism — at least when it comes to attacking political enemies.

Last weekend, Eric Trump shared an old video of Joe Biden saying he opposed George W. Bush’s attempts to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. In the clip, Biden says the Defense of Marriage Act already defines that marriage is between one man and one woman and there is no need for a constitutional amendment. Eric Trump found the clip offensive to the “LGBTQ community” because it shows Biden believing marriage is only between one man and one woman.

I hope everyone in the #LGBTQ community is able to see this video of Joe Biden:

On Tuesday, Ivanka Trump shared her outrage over Biden suggesting in 1981 that working mothers led to the deterioration of the family.

I couldn’t agree more w/ @SenGillibrand and @SenSchumer Spokeswoman and Advisor @Meredithk27!@JoeBiden should explain to America how a mom working leads the deterioration of the family.

Donald Trump Jr. has previously retweeted conservatives who attack Mitt Romney for firing Richard Grenell from his 2012 campaign for being gay.

I remember Romney as the guy who fired my friend @RichardGrenell because Rick was openly gay and Romney was too much of a coward to stand up for his friend. That’s what I remember. cc @ChrisRBarron https://t.co/tcEv1fQgNa

These complaints seem odd for high-profile conservatives to parrot. Nearly every Republican lawmakers believed marriage was between one man and one woman up until 2015. Most of them still probably believe this, yet don’t talk about it anymore. Most Republicans would also say they support traditional families and would not bat an eye at concerns working mothers would undermine them. Conservatives also fight for the right for religious people to fire people who do not properly adhere to their beliefs. These are core social conservative beliefs, but the Trump kids believe they are beyond the pale.

Evangelicals are an integral part of Trump’s coalition. It’s unlikely these appeals will persuade any Biden voter to change, but they may convince some evangelicals to stay home. If the future of the GOP doesn’t represent their values, why would evangelicals continue to vote for the party?

It’s something for the Trump kids to keep in mind the next time they want to score a political point against Biden.
