Unemployment — a.k.a Immigration, Queen Of Public Policy Issues — Top Concern In Gallup Poll

Two points about today’s new Gallup poll:

PRINCETON, NJ — Thirty-nine percent of Americans in September name unemployment or jobs as the most important problem facing the country, up from 29% in August. Unemployment has now passed "the economy" as the most frequently mentioned issue.

Unemployment Re-Emerges as Most Important Problem in U.S., by Jeffrey James, September 15, 2001.

Point Number One:

It’s really impressive how well immigration does as a stand-alone issue. Some 4% of those polled named it as their main concern. That compares to just 7% for healthcare, 4% with education, and 3% for "War/ Wars", all of which get many times the MSM attention. "Taxes" comes in at a mere 2%.

For perspective, just four issues break double digits: besides unemployment (39%) and "Economy in general" (28%), there’s "Federal budget deficit/ federal debt" (12%) and "disatisfaction with government/ Congress/ politicans" (14%). Point Number Two:

Unemployment is an immigration issue, as VDARE.com has said repeatedly. Every palliative has failed, and there is literally no other answer except a crackdown on the illegal presence and a moratorium on legal immigration. Even my highly politic old friend David Frum has been mentioning this option recently, so it must now be considered acceptable in Establishment circles, even if some mysterious force keeps it out of public debate.

As I wrote in Alien Nation back in 1995 (!), there is an immigration dimension to virtually every public policy issue — certainly to "Economy in General" and "Federal budget deficit".

Back in the Middle Ages, theology was considered "Queen of the Sciences"; more recently, it’s been said of mathematics.

Today, immigration is the Queen of American public policy issues. And none can be fully solved without addressing it.
