Someone shot up downtown Austin, and so far I haven’t seen reports that anyone besides the gunman himself is dead. When I heard that targets included the Mexican Consulate, I thought "This is another one the SPLC is going to blame on me, and people like me." Here’s the report, with emphasis added.
Austin’s Hispanic Chief of of Police, Art Acevedo [Twitter] has identified the suspect as a "white male" and is speculating that this was a protest against the president’s illegal amnesty:
Police: Slain gunman fired more than 100 rounds in downtown AustinBy Abby Ohlheiser, Washington Post, November 28 at 11:11 AM
A gunman in Austin opened fire Friday on “multiple downtown buildings” — including a federal courthouse, the Mexican consulate and Austin Police Department headquarters — before dying of a gunshot wound, according to officials in the Texas capital. Authorities initially said the man, described as a white male in his 50s, had been shot and killed by police, but said later that they were still investigating the possibility that he died of a self-inflicted wound.
Authorities are still investigating a possible motive. But Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo told reporters Friday that, based on his own experience and the suspect’s targets, “the national debate about immigration right now…certainly comes to mind.”
Describing the suspect’s actions as “violent anti-everything behavior, anti-government behavior if you will,” Acevedo said he was willing to speculate that the current “heated” political discourse on immigration issues “might have fed into some of this.”
While firing at the Mexican consulate, the suspect also attempted to “ignite” the building using small cylinders of fuel used by campers, Acevedo said. The suspect also fired at a nearby bank.
Police are not yet identifying the suspect, but Acevedo said that the suspect had a criminal record.[More]
Now imagine a white police chief reporting on a black-on-white mass shooting — of the kind that happens on regular basis — and saying that the unidentified suspect was a "black male" and the police chief was "willing to speculate" that it was caused by black racial hatred against whites — inflamed by the current "current “heated” political discourse" about Ferguson, Missouri.
It wouldn’t happen. In most cases, I have to do all kinds of internet detective work to find out the shooter’s race at all.
