In American college sports, a “walk-on” is a player who doesn’t receive an athletic scholarship out of high school but still makes the team.
Since 2010, the Burlsworth Trophy — named after an unrecruited walk-on fat kid at the U. of Arkansas, who worked his way up to football All-American before, as such things sometime do, being killed in a car crash after being the 63rd pick in the NFL draft — has been awarded to the top walk-on of the year.
This season’s college football winner was 5’11” 190 pound Stetson Bennett, who quarterbacked the U. of Georgia to two national championships.
Not surprisingly, 12 out of the 13 Burlsworth Trophy winners have been white.
