Just one more piece of off-topic trivia. I’m just not feeling very serious today.I never went to journo school, but I know people who did, and they tell me that news-reporting-wise, there’s a right way and a wrong way.
I can’t believe this is the right way. The online version of the London Daily Mail is currently running this headline: Woman in her 20s killed after being crushed by falling window frame in high winds while walking down London street eating a banana.
I’m sorry for the unfortunate lady, of course, but I don’t see the relevance of the banana. If she'd been walking down the street texting, or fiddling with her pocketbook, or picking her nose, would that have been headline-worthy?
If I’m missing some point here, would a journo-school graduate please enlighten me?
UPDATE: The Daily Mail has thought better of their headline — the banana survives in the URL and page title. (The line at the very top of the screen.)
