01 — Intro. And Radio Derb is on the air! Greetings, listeners, from your perseveringly genial host John Derbyshire, this last weekend of 2023.

I have been somewhat incapacitated for most of this month, and particularly this past couple of weeks. In particular, I haven’t been able to give Radio Derb the concentrated attention it requires.

In lieu thereof, this week’s podcast has an unusual structure. In place of farm-fresh material, I am going to dig into the archives and give you segments from past end-of-year Radio Derbs. These are all short segments, most from the closing miscellany.

That will keep this podcast’s length down to something manageable. It will also keep it a bit lighter than usual, as it’s in the closing miscellany that I put less-serious items.

So: Some year-end Radio Derbs, 2004 to 2022. Off we go.

02 — 2004: Frosty the candidate. 2004 was of course an election year and at year end the result was in. I gloated.

03 — 2005: Fences, neighbors. December 2005 there was a proposal in the air to build a proper wall along our southern border. I passed comment.

04 — 2006: Illegal labor. In 2006 ICE was still raiding employers who used illegal-alien labor. I wondered if perhaps we could enlist trial lawyers to help.

05 — 2007: Eternal vigilance. Congressional treason on the border fence.

06 — 2008: Riots in Sweden. By unruly … youths.

07 — 2009: Get a government job!. I keep telling you.

08 — 2010: Obama’s biggest disappointment. He couldn’t reward scofflaws as much as he wanted to.

09 — 2011: The War on Christmas. A skirmish.

10 — 2012: Shakespeare too male. And too white.

11 — 2013: Dumb kids, smart kids. Things we've known for ever.

12 — 2015: Star Wars, nah. Low-grade space opera.

13 — 2016: Shop till you drop. Hazards of shopping.

14 — 2017: Strategic deportation. A modest proposal.

15 — 2018: Are there any transgender opera singers?. If not, why not?

16 — 2019: Sixteen years for bad thoughts. A hate-crime atrocity.

17 — 2020: Elephant story. Nature imitates art.

18 — 2021: Around the world in 80 woke clichés. They're messing with Jules Verne!

19 — 2022: Sinking of the Derbyshire. An unfathomable mystery fathomed.

20 — Signoff. As always, ladies and gents, thank you for listening, for your emails and your kind donations. In regards to the last two items there, I am far behind in responding so please bear with me.

Here is Peter Dawson to sing us out. Happy New Year!
