Who could have predicted it? Yasmin Seweid, an 18 year old Muslim girl, faked a supposed attack on the New York City subway by drunken Trump supporters. The initial wave of indignation after this supposed hate crime swept the media, with major political and cultural figures like Senator Bob Casey announcing their solidarity with the supposed victim. There hasn’t been nearly so much exposure since it was revealed to be a hoax.
Indeed, the hoaxer’s family isn’t even ashamed. Seweid’s sister instead expressed concern about the “mental state of young Muslim women who feel that they have to lie so intensely to survive” .[Sister of hijab hoaxer lashes out at media, New York City Police, by Chuck Ross, Daily Caller, December 15, 2016]
Get it? She’s still a victim. It’s still our fault. One wonders why she wants to continue to live in a country which is supposedly so racist instead of the dozens of Muslim countries around the world.
Is this incident on the SPLC’s list of “reported hate incidents” that they’ve been trumpeting since the election? If it is, will they take it down?
There have also been many others. To use just another example from today, one Vincent Palmer, an African-American man, set his ex-girlfriend’s car on fire, taped a note with racial slurs and the words “KKK” and “Trump” to her mailbox, and faked his own kidnapping. This was also a hoax [Cops: Man faked ‘KKK’ hate crime, own kidnapping after lighting car on fire, by Stephanie Allen, Orlando Sentinel, December 12, 2016]
And it’s not like this is unique. Fake hate crimes from Muslims have been a staple of American life since September 11, 2001, as well as actual terrorist attacks directed against Americans.
Yet despite how many of these kinds of cases are reported, it seems we get new ones every day. And they all follow the same pattern. Massive initial coverage, followed by subdued, reluctant, below the fold reports when they are inevitably proven false.
What’s more concerning is the Narrative of non-whites supposedly under siege by hysterical Trump supporters is being used to push negative policy changes. For example, within an article that uncritically repeated the claims of a tidal wave of hate crimes caused by Donald Trump’s election, NBC inexplicably lumped in Steve Bannon, the head of Breitbart. The implication was that Bannon was somehow causing people to be attacked on the street.
Cathy Rainone [Twitter] sneers:
Bannon, the Trump campaign CEO, came from Breitbart News, the site that under his leadership has pushed a nationalist, anti-establishment agenda and become one of the leading outlets of the so-called alt-right — a movement often associated with far-right efforts to preserve "white identity," oppose multiculturalism and defend "Western values." [More Hate Crimes Reported Despite Trump’s Call to “stop it,” NBC 4, December 6, 2016]
As you might have guessed, Rainone has other articles talking about the supposed surge of KKK activity and why Trump needs to talk about it for some reason, and about Trump’s “hardline” appointments on immigration. Notice the scare quotes on words like “Western values” as well.
And this phony epidemic is being used to justify a coming crackdown on free speech. Professor Amos Guiora writes:
As has been made dramatically clear in the past weeks, there is potential danger to minority groups. They are deserving of our protection. We are living in a time when reports of hate are surfacing at an alarming rate. This is not the type of society we should be comfortable accepting. We need a national conversation that asks: "What are the limits of tolerating hate?"
But who defines “hate?” The media seems pretty comfortable with speech which, if directed against anyone other than white people, would be called racist. The slurs against Russians, as a people, are also pretty extreme these days. Yet we know so-called hate speech laws simply would not apply to collective insults against Europeans or European-Americans.
This is the larger Fake News we need to be worried about. Fake crimes, used to justify a fake narrative, which then serves as the justification for overt repression of Americans. The American media isn’t a guardian of freedom, it’s freedom’s greatest enemy. Which is why independent sources of information like VDARE.com, which rely entirely on loyal readers and listeners like you, are so important.
I’m Virginia Dare and we’ll talk again soon.
