Minneapolis Public Schools have introduced a new mandate in cooperation with a local teachers union stating that in the event of mass-layoffs of employees, White teachers will be the first to go before “educators of color.”
In what is referred to as “educators of color protections,” if a non-white teacher becomes subject to a layoff, Minneapolis Public Schools must layoff a white teacher of the “next least” seniority.
Non-white teachers will also be exempt entirely from layoffs in the district, and former non-white teachers will be prioritized for re-instatement above white teachers.
The school district claims these actions are set forth in order “to remedy the continuing effects of past discrimination by the District.”
This discriminatory mandate is already being challenged, with constitutional lawyer Hans Bader, who says “when it comes to termination…an employer can’t racially discriminate even against whites.”

So…uh…about that white privilege. Is this what systemic inequality and implicit bias looks like in 2022 America? Where white people must sacrifice their vocation first to the betterment of non-whites?
