Re: Allan Wall’s Column: Border States Feel Strain — In Mexico
If I didn’t know better, I might think this is a Saturday Night Live skit.
But as Wall reported, the Mexican state of Sonora is so outraged that its citizens have returned in large numbers that it sent a delegation of nine state legislators to Tucson to say Arizona’s new employer sanctions law will devastate the Mexican state. [Sonoran Officials Slam Sanction Law in Tucson, Sheryl Kornman, Tucson Citizen, January 15, 2008]
The Legal Arizona Workers Law, which took effect January 1, 2008 punishes employers who knowingly hire individuals who don’t have valid legal documents to work in the United States.
Penalties include suspension and/or loss of business licenses. Because more companies are complying, illegal immigrants can’t find work so they are going home.
Apparently, Mexico is surprised to learn that it is not a subsidiary of the U.S. and can do whatever it pleases.
I live in one of Arizona’s biggest (illegal) immigrant neighborhoods. Unfortunately, not all of them have returned to Sonora They are completely over-running our community
Specifically, their children are filling up the school districts where Mexican-born enrollment can reach 30 to 40 percent of the total but with very high drop out rates. Those who do eke by will be unprepared for college.
This alien invasion comes at a time when the United States needs better educated Americans to fill highly skilled jobs in our new economy.
