Re: Joe Guzzardi’s Column: Blacks Join The Immigration Reform Fray — At Last!
I was once a card-carrying liberal — until the Democrats decided to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Now I am a staunch conservative.
I want all illegal aliens out of my country. Samuel P. Huntington is right. Aliens will not assimilate. Instead they will become a permanent underclass in the United States.
It’s awful how black elites argue that amnesty would not affect us. Who are they kidding? Black kids in Chicago are routinely denied jobs because they do not speak Spanish. I find it unbelievable that we must adapt to these illegal immigrants. Why on earth would we insist on granting legal rights to low-skilled workers and criminals?
I do not know why black elites have not come out against amnesty. Secretly, they must realize that this is the greatest threat to us since slavery.
Yet, they remain silent. I say shame on the Congressional Black Caucus, Tavis Smiley, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. If you really want to empower American blacks, tell them the truth. Immigration is a threat to black prosperity.
I am no racist or bigot. I would be against granting legal status to millions of Nigerians, for example, if they were living in the US illegally.

Guzzardi wrote a great article on the changing perceptions and attitudes of the black population.
I hope both black leaders and their followers will become aware of other painfully oppressive issues which many of us non-black folks have been speaking on for decades.
Stop beating up the "bigoted white folks" in general and deal with racism on an individual basis. Enough laws are on the books to eradicate racism and bigotry without resorting to generalizations about certain ethnic groups.
When something is wrong — like black job displacement by illegal aliens — we need to deal with that directly without using old labels that stand in the way of making meaningful progress.

I have been emailing my Democratic Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski as well my black House Representative, Elijah Cummings, also a Democrat.
I have told them repeatedly that the Bush amnesty bill is bad for black citizens. When they vote for Bush’s amnesty bill, they demonstrate that they dislike black citizens but like illegal immigrants.
In the Baltimore metropolitan area, it is obvious that many jobs once held by blacks are now given to illegal immigrants. Baltimore has an unemployment rate that hovers just under 8 percent. Many out of the work force are black.
Maryland has over 100,000 illegal aliens. But employers like illegals because they are afraid to complain and work for low wages.
I sometimes wonder if business interests haven’t bought off black legislators with campaign donations so with the tacit understanding that they will support Bush’s amnesty.
Joe Guzzardi comments: The NAACP is in complete accord with our correspondent. Read the Boston Globe about the applause Congressman and presidential candidate Tom Tancredo received from the NAACP when, in his speech at its annual convention, he stressed the impact illegal immigration had on black employment. The story is here.

I read Guzzardi’s column with relief … if that’s the proper word… that the blacks are finally awakening as to the threat illegal immigration poses to them.
I’m of the Bill Cosby school of thought regarding blacks. Although incidents of white racism have certainly not helped their cause, blacks have brought some of their plight on themselves by not showing enough personal accountability.
During Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, blacks demonstrated little or no responsibility because of government pandering. Some of that attitude is still visible today. In New Orleans, too few showed initiative after Katrina even when it became apparent that the government, to its discredit, was going to be slow in aiding the displaced.
Here’s a personal anecdote that may interest your readers. I delivered mail in Harlem while I was in college in the early '60s. During that era in New York, the welfare mentality was endemic. On one occasion when I put mail in the slots in a state housing project, I looked around and a crowd gathered behind me, all demanding their welfare checks.
Since I was a temporary Christmastime employee, I wasn’t allowed to carry checks. I told them that the regular mailman was coming in a few minutes.
Maybe blacks that aren’t followers of race hustlers like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have gotten message that illegal immigration is retarding their progress. But it may not go too far. The dole mentality among many blacks is still too prevalent.
Ultimately, our illustrious politicians and we ourselves are responsible for the mess we're in. The Great Society made the blacks the favored minority, gave generously to them and asked little in return. Ten years later, looking the other way completely, the government let the illegal alien invasion run amok.
As a result, we now have an alien culture that won’t assimilate and a black subculture that too often is indolent and apathetic.
As the prophetic comic strip character Pogo said: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

I am so pleased that Guzzardi included in his column the e-mail written by an irate black teacher to talkshow host immigration enthusiast Tavis Smiley who is also black.
I sat through one of Smiley’s mindless programs that defended illegal immigration in the most uninformed way. Smiley had offered no facts to support his opinion. [VDARE.COM note: listen to Smiley talk about immigration here.]
I thought about writing Smiley but I knew there was no way he would listen to a white middle-class housewife. I thank the anonymous teacher who did it for me.
